Annual Exam
WELL-WOMAN VISIT & PHYSICALS
Experts recommend going to Ob-Gyn appointments at least once a year for a well-woman exam. These annual exams include services that ensure your health and safety. These screenings provide preventive healthcare and opportunities for education on how to best care for your female organs. If an issue is caught, it is best to address it early to prevent any risk of health problems in current or later stages of life.
Why Ob-Gyn Exams Matter
The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends that girls have their first gynecologic visit between ages 13 and 15. These early visits are typically educational and non-invasive. Routine screenings like Pap smears and pelvic exams usually begin at age 19 or older, based on individual needs.
What to Expect at Your Annual Exam
An annual Ob-Gyn exam is a comprehensive wellness check that includes screenings, vaccinations, and physical exams tailored to your age and health history.
Key Screenings and Exams
Pap Smear and Pelvic Exam
A Pap smear checks for precancerous changes on the cervix. Your provider may also perform a bimanual exam to assess the health of your uterus and ovaries.
STD Screenings
Depending on your symptoms and sexual history, your provider may recommend urine, blood, swab, or physical tests for various sexually transmitted diseases.
Clinical Breast Exam
A quick, in-office exam where your provider checks for lumps or changes in breast tissue. You’ll also be shown how to perform regular self-exams at home.
Mammography
Recommended based on age and risk, this X-ray imaging test helps detect early signs of breast cancer.
FOBT (Fecal Occult Blood Test)
A stool sample test that can screen for colon cancer or other rectal abnormalities by detecting hidden blood in the stool.
Preventive Vaccinations
HPV Vaccine
Protects against cancer-causing strains of human papillomavirus, reducing the risk of cervical and other related cancers.
Routine Immunizations
Your annual exam may also include updates for flu shots or TDAP (tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccines based on age and immunization history.
